Any 32 bytes. A different salt gives the same payees a different split, so use one per pool.
Creating costs the split account’s rent (about 0.0033 SOL), paid once by whoever creates it. Each token it receives needs its books opened once (anyone can, from the split’s page).

How a split gets paid
- Name the split’s authority as a pool’s royalty recipient or payee.
- Royalty fills the authority’s claim balance; Collect moves it into the split.
- Payee shares and plain transfers are booked with Distribute.
- Each payee claims its share; anyone can push to payees that are not pull-only.
